Updates

Version

vagaris version
vagaris version --json

Prints the installed version, the latest version on the npm registry (npm view @vagarylabs/vagaris version, 10-second timeout; (could not reach npm registry) when offline), whether an update is available, and — when vagaris update has run before — the version rollback would return to and when the last update happened. --json returns current, latest, updateAvailable, packageName, plus rollbackAvailable/rollbackTarget and lastUpdatedAt/lastUpdatedTo when known.

vagaris --version prints only the version string.

Update

vagaris update
vagaris update --to 0.4.0
vagaris update --dry-run
  1. Determines the target: --to <version> or the latest on npm. If neither can be resolved (offline), exits 1.
  2. If already at the target and no --to was given, reports "Already up to date" and exits 0.
  3. Records the current version in ~/.vagris/update-history.json so rollback knows where to return.
  4. Runs npm install -g @vagarylabs/vagaris@<target> with the output attached to your terminal (two-minute timeout).
  5. Records the new version on success. On failure, the previous version is still installed and the command exits 1.

--dry-run prints the exact npm install -g command without running it. --json reports each step as an object.

Rollback

vagaris rollback
vagaris rollback --to 0.3.1
vagaris rollback --dry-run

Reverts to the version recorded before the last update, or to --to <version>. With no recorded version and no --to, it exits 1 and says so. Rolling back records the current version too, so a rollback can itself be rolled back. Same --dry-run and --json behaviour as update.

Uninstall

vagaris uninstall --dry-run
vagaris uninstall
vagaris uninstall --force

Removes what the CLI created: the instance directory (config, .env, database files, logs, storage, backups, secrets key), auth.json, context.json and update-history.json. Before deleting the local credential it revokes it server-side. --dry-run lists the artefacts without removing anything; --force skips the safety prompts; --json prints the plan and result as an object.

It does not delete inside other tools' homes: skills that vagaris agent local-cli --install-skills linked into ~/.claude/skills are listed with the reason they are kept, so you can remove them yourself.

Uninstalling the binary itself is the package manager's job: npm uninstall -g @vagarylabs/vagaris or brew uninstall vagaris.

Protocol version

The CLI and server negotiate a protocol version on every request. When the server is newer than the CLI understands, commands exit 7 (PROTOCOL_MISMATCH) with an upgrade hint; run vagaris update. See Troubleshooting.
